Sketchbook Detour
***Temporary Sketchbook Detour***
I began a solo motorcycle trip from Los Angeles on Friday, June 22, 2012, heading north, as far as I'm having fun. I'll be updating my sketchbook with posts from the road, and not necessarily artwork. I'm too beat by the time I'm in camp or in a cheap motel.
I'll continue with the sketches when I get back in a few weeks.
Yeah right! It's been months! I'll get back to it as I finish up some classes and have more time again. Maybe in another month, like in February, 2013.

Mayan Stela Charcoal Sketch
Charcoal is so messy otherwise I'd draw with it all the time. Here's another work drawn from the relief on a Mayan stela (a what?!?) I spent about 20 minutes doing this quick sketch to get the main ideas of the image down. I'd spend another 30 minutes if I were to finish it up.

Mayan Serpent Ruins Drawing
I love studying the artwork and ideas behind earlier cultures. We are a little too smug in our attitudes about how the world works and shouldn't readily dismiss the stories behind the artwork of previous civilizations.
With that in mind, this stuff is scary! Check out the photo by Mathew Ballard of some Mayan ruins that inspired this drawing.

Skull Eyes Horror Ink Doodle
This one started off as me doodling some eyeballs while in a meeting. Later I rediscovered some older drawings I where I put them in Photoshop and copied and flipped them to create a sort of mirror image. I guess I was also influenced by some of HR Giger's work as well...
Now on to some kitten or puppy drawings...

Wrong Ink Sketch
This is a strange one. Yep. That obvious? Okay, so I was drawing this woman from a catalog of ancient sculptures. She was done in a dark colored metal, and I'm not sure it translated quite right. Hmm... It is unique though.

Face Off Skull
Apparently I didn't enjoy this meeting. Gross. What the hell is wrong with me? Don't expect these types of drawings in the future. Yuck.
One positive thing: I do like the drawing of the hands. Well done self. Well done.

Mayan Ink Coloring Book Style
More Mayan studies. This dude was drawn from looking at a relief, then I spaced, squiggles got out of control and I filled some in with ink. It's cheesy and looks like something from the back of a children's cereal box.
Note: I'm available for cereal box drawings.

Not a Sketch - Custom DR650 Dash
Over the past week, I didn't get a whole lot of drawing done. Instead, I was designing and building a dash for my DR650 dual sport motorcycle. I needed a spot for my voltmeter, some switches, a USB power outlet (how cool is that?!?), and a better mount for my Vapor speedometer. From a piece of plastic found for 99 cents at a thrift store, to adventure dash. That's got to qualify as art!

Burning Paper Dragons Doodle
I had a piece of paper with some burns from a magnifying glass that I began doodling upon. (Is "upon" or "on" the way to say / write it? I like the pompous / magical sound of "upon," so there we have it.) Three heads developed into long necked bodies, and apparatuses. (I do like "apparati," but it won't fly with spell-check, and I don't think it's really a word.) It was semi-boring without color, so I paint-bucketed it in Photoshop. (FYI - "Volcanos" can be spelled with or without an "e" at the end, even though spell-check prefers "volcanoes.")
