Sketchbook Detour

***Temporary Sketchbook Detour***

I began a solo motorcycle trip from Los Angeles on Friday, June 22, 2012, heading north, as far as I'm having fun. I'll be updating my sketchbook with posts from the road, and not necessarily artwork. I'm too beat by the time I'm in camp or in a cheap motel.

I'll continue with the sketches when I get back in a few weeks.

Yeah right! It's been months! I'll get back to it as I finish up some classes and have more time again. Maybe in another month, like in February, 2013.

It's my Alien Reptile Jesus Doodle Sketch

This one sorta evolved (or devolved) into religious iconography.  I'm a fan of UFOs and enjoy the odd Renaissance painting that contains unusual things in the backgrounds, so naturally, my doodling  turned into a potentially offensive drawing.  Sorry if you are irked, but I am just playing around and exploring where my mind takes these things.  No harm intended.

Ink Sketch of a Girl

I've been doing all of my drawings in ink, then to add value, I lick my fingertip, and smudge.  I love this stuff, but it is hard to control.  If anyone knows of a good white paint pen or the like, that won't get muddy picking up the ink, send me a note.

Wise Tree Drawing

Another one of my drawings of a tree is very popular, so maybe I'll play around with plants and trees to see what else I can come up with.

Motorcycle Touring Day 7 - Lillooet to Nakusp (Unlucky 13 Motorcycle Skull)

This was a fantastic day of epic scenery and dodging bears, deer, and rockfalls. It was so wonderful that I couldn't come close to catching it in photos or in a sketch, so my drawing is about something else.  I would come across this imagery again and again this day.

I don't understand the obsession with death, violence, and anti-luck imagery that some motorcyclists employ all over their jackets, helmets, skin, bikes, etc.  Motorcycle riding is inherently dangerous and I'm of the school of thought that believes that the ideas and attitudes that you put "out there," attract "like" themes or things.  With my ideas about how "it" works, the last thing you want to attract is the essence in these images.  Of course, I think this stuff looks bad-ass, but I'm all about all the luck (and spiritual assistance) I can get when riding.

Ink and Photoshop Doodle Play

I was playing around with a failed attempt at an ink drawing and ended up drawing a couple of faces.  When revising the drawing, I threw it on the scanner, then in Photoshop decided I'd figure out what I wanted to do with it in ink, but like what happened in my rough design on the computer.  I'm not sure what's happening, but I like the expressions.

Motorcycle Touring Day 6 - Port Angeles to Lillooet

This was one of my best days.  I had parked the bike to take in the awesome scenery and give my focus a rest up in the mountains above Whistler, BC.  I had left that morning from Port Angeles, WA, via ferry to Victoria, Canada (I made it!).  Then rode to Nanaimo, to barely catch the next ferry that would take me on to Vancouver.  Leaving the ferry, I took the Sea to Sky Highway (99) through some of the neatest, and treacherous scenery, to arrive in Lillooet that afternoon.  I'll be going back!

Motorcycle Touring Day 5 - Newport to Port Angeles

I was surprised after riding for so many miles along the coast and fun roads through forests to come into an open area with a giant hangar with "Air Museum" painted on it.  The Tillamook Air Museum had to be explored and really turned out to be quite the treat!  I highly recommend going and checking it out if you happen to be anywhere close by (like the Tillamook Cheese Factory (that I cautiously road past (because of the chaos of all of the RV occupants focused on the excitement of free cheese))).

Disturbing Cyclops Doodle

I did this disturbing doodle while thinking about what to draw for my moto-tour drawing.  I don't think I'll stick solely with the tour drawings. And today I learned that solely has two "L"s.
