Sketchbook Detour

***Temporary Sketchbook Detour***

I began a solo motorcycle trip from Los Angeles on Friday, June 22, 2012, heading north, as far as I'm having fun. I'll be updating my sketchbook with posts from the road, and not necessarily artwork. I'm too beat by the time I'm in camp or in a cheap motel.

I'll continue with the sketches when I get back in a few weeks.

Yeah right! It's been months! I'll get back to it as I finish up some classes and have more time again. Maybe in another month, like in February, 2013.

Femme Fatales - Alice in Wonderland

We hit up our friendly neighborhood comic book store, Hi De Ho today.  For some reason I can't actually read a comic.  I guess I get caught up with the stylized images and lose track of what's happening in the story.  But I do really appreciate the artwork.  I think that comic books have some of the coolest paintings done for their covers.

Anyhow, I picked up a Preview Magazine, that shows a variety of imagery, and lots of covers of future releases.  While browsing through the catalog, I happened upon the Femme Fatales version of Alice in Wonderland from Diamond Toys and did a quick and rough drawing based on her (or it, I guess).

Moon Landing Hoax

This one started with the eyes and the skull and crossbones.  The rocket appeared, then the skull turned into a flag.  The moon and shadows finished it off.

If you've ever looked into the Moon Landing Hoax, one of the big pieces of evidence is the appearance of multiple shadows, seemingly from different lighting sources.  A forum on David Icke's website lays it out pretty well.

Yeah, I believe that we've landed on the moon, but there's definitely some conspiracies I'd bet on.

Staff Meeting - Claustrophobia Doodle

Many of the doodles I do in meetings are similar in theme. They show figures that are trapped or in disturbing scenes.  I hadn't realized this until deciding to post the drawings online.  They must reflect my innermost feelings about being in meetings.

Painting Prep: Harley Sketch

Here's a quick sketch for a painting I'm working on.  It's an exercise in seeing for me.  I get a chance to figure out where I think things are supposed to be versus seeing where they really are.

For example, I need to watch out and not have his seat so plush that he's sunken deep into it.  I didn't see that in the sketch, but I'll have to look at the photo again and see where he's actually sitting.  See what I'm getting at?

Purple Man Sketch

I'm having difficulty with what color this dude is.  He looks like he's a copy from a ditto machine.

Sexy Woman Sketch

This image had her hand next to her mouth, across her chin.  After working on the fingers for a while, I decided it detracted from her face.  I erased with a white plastic eraser to get most of it, then hit it with my new electric eraser.  Good stuff...  I love her lips!

Ta Dah! It's a Cyclops!

Again...  Not sure where this guy came from.  Pen on copy paper with Photoshop gradient effect.  I like it.

Skeleton in the Box Doodle

I'm not sure where this one came from.  How terrifying would it be to turn the crank and have a skeleton pop out?  This was a quick doodle.  Pen on copy paper.

King Tut Sketch

Here's another sketch from a National Geographic.  Done in jet black pencil and my new fandangled electric eraser.

Pencil Drawn Portrait of Yvon Chouinard

I was flipping through National Geographic, and was drawn (yes, a pun) to this guy's photo in an Amex advertisement.  It's the founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard.  I've seen his interviews.  He's a pretty kick ass kind of dude.  See a video of him on Patagonia's blog.

Anyhow, the drawing was pretty straight forward.  I used a Stanford Ebony Jet Black pencil (or maybe Prismacolor Ebony pencil--I think they're the same thing, Gasp!), my finger for smudging, and a Staedtler Mars plastic eraser to fix it up and to do highlights.

By Request: Star Wars Stormtrooper Sketch

This one is for Crystal.  She's a die-hard Star Wars fan.  And I'm willing to do requests as long as I'm into the subject, and I do like Star Wars too.

Yes.  I'm a nerd.  I like sci-fi.  I won't call it "sci-fic."  I'm not that much of a nerd, but enough to know that there's a debate about what we call it.
